This Week at Downend (W/C 12th April 2021)
This week at Downend, Babies have been adventuring Under the Sea with some water play. The children wrapped up in their wetsuits and dove into the bright blue water to see what they could find. The children picked up the different sea creature toys, listened to whale song and ocean sounds and discovered how to make gigantic SPLASHES with their hands!
Back inside some babies explored a floury sensory tray! The children used lots of different resources like spoons, shells and saucepans to move the flour around and make marks in the bottom of the tray.
In the garden some children have been observing the signs of Spring. They have been helping to tend to the new flowers, raking the soil, planting seeds and watering the new shoots!
This week Kindergarten have been getting to know their friends! The children have been having lots of conversations about themselves, discussing our similarities, differences and favourite things to do. The children then drew miniature portraits of themselves, paying attention to the things that make them individual – what colour are your eyes? How long is your hair?
Kindergarten have also been exploring the resources on NSPCC’s PANTS campaign. They read some books like ‘Aliens Love Underpants’, decorated their own pants and played matching games linking the correct colours and patterns. Whilst doing this the children had lots of discussions about their underpants, our own individual boundaries and respecting each other’s bodies.
In the art studio Kindergarten worked together as a team to decorate an amazing peacock. The children chose from lots of different coloured feathers and carefully stuck them down to make a fantastic fluffy collage!
This week Pre-School got stuck into a multi-textural tray. It was set up with lots of different resources to discover – crunchy tin foil, soft cotton wool, and perfectly poppable bubble wrap! The children took it in turns to feel each different texture and think of the words to describe how it feels – smooth, shiny, soft…
Pre-School have also been exploring the new ‘Curiosity Room’! They discovered the interactive white board, selecting the colours and carefully making marks on the screen. The children also explored some of the ‘real’ resources, looking at keys on the typewriter and twirling the dial on the rotary phone. Keep an eye on our blog for more information on this room next week!
On a sunny day in the garden some Pre-Schoolers explored shadows. They took it in turns to make different shapes and poses, and discovered how their shadows change as they moved. They then used chalk to trace around the different shapes, leaving their outlines on the ground – wow!
