October
This Month at Coombe Dingle

Nursery

This month in Nursery we have been exploring our new Core Book for this term 'The Rainbow Fish'! We got stuck into a colourful pom-pom tray, we were encouraged to use the tweezers to pick up the different sized pom poms and collect them in bowls. This was a great challenge for our fine motor skills! We also had a copy of the book which we looked through together.

There has been some mess-free sensory play with paint pockets! The paint had been taped in and onto the floor so nothing could escape, we were then encouraged to use our fingers and other tools to manipulate the paint. We explored the new textures and our adults named the different colours with us!

There was further colour exploration with a tray filled with beautiful fabrics, the sensory viewfinders and flash cards! We enjoyed stacking the cubes and playing 'peekaboo' with the fabrics.

We've also been role playing as mini-builders this month! We explored the cereal between our fingers, closing our hands so that we made a crunching sound. We tried on the hard hats and moved the construction trucks back and forth!

Kindergarten

This month in Kindergarten we spent lots of time outside enjoying the first signs of Autumn! We took some magnifying glasses to the top garden, placing it up to our eyes and looking closely in all the bushes and the soil.

Back inside we explored a hot chocolate station in the tuff tray! We had brown paint thinned down with water, squishy foam for the whipped cream, and even cotton wool balls for the marshmallows! We took turns to fill our cups up and add our toppings, we also talked about all the different ways we can keep warm.

In the art studio we explored painting in a new way - instead of regular paintbrushes, we used pasta to create our colourful artwork! We dipped the pasta into paint and used it to spread colours all over our paper, navigating the interesting texture of the floppy pasta.

Down in the dining room we went to make fruit salad! With the help from our adults we sliced up apples and bananas with our dog knives. This was a great boost for our confidence! After the fruit was all chopped up with enjoyed it with a glass of milk - delicious.

Pre-School

As Autumn comes in we've still had some warm weather, and we noticed the tomatoes in our top garden vegetable patch are still ripening! We went to check how they are growing, noticing that some of them are green, some are orange and some have turned red! We talked about the life cycle of a tomato, how they grow from little seeds to a full plant. Then we practiced our cutting skills, we cut some tomatoes from the shop and some from our garden, and we had a taste.

There has been lots of different weather on display this month, and we spoke about the thunder and lightening we saw! We then took part in a raincloud experiment, to help us understand how rain falls from the sky. In a jar there was water and a layer of oil, and on top of that a layer of squishy foam which we said was a cloud. We then squeezed pipettes of blue water through the 'cloud', we saw how the rain seeped through and into the bottom like raindrops!

We also had an activity related to our oral health. We were given a mirror to look for your teeth, when the adults asked were they nice and clean, we nodded yes! When asked how many times do we need to brush our teeth a day, we said 'lots of times'! The adults explained that we brush our teeth twice a day, for 2 minutes each time. We were then introduced to the dentist tools, we loved the dental mirror which could help the dentist check the inside bit of our teeth.

We have also explored our new Core Book, Meg & Mog! We were at the top garden to read the story, and went to the mud kitchen to create our cauldron and stirred it up - it was fun mixing colours into our cauldron, we explored our pouring skills and enjoyed creating different pots of pretend soups with leaves and mud.

Back upstairs we used some conkers to create some paper picture painting using a tray, rolling them back and forth through paint! We also used conkers, pasta and autumnal paper leaves in a threading activity.

Out in the garden we practiced number recognition! We chalked some numbers on the ground and Becky held onto each number cushion to make it easy for us to locate, whilst Mark called out loud each number for you to find. We did a great job recognising them as well as telling what number it was!

At the start of October it was the Mid-Autumn Festival. We talked about the bright, round moon that lit up the sky last night and shared how people celebrate this beautiful festival - by gathering with family, enjoying delicious mooncakes, and playing with colourful lanterns.

To make the day even more exciting, we created our own lanterns! First, we practiced our cutting skills by following the lines drawn on the paper. With a little help, we carefully copied those lines with our scissors — great job staying focused and trying our best! Once the cutting was done, we wrapped up the lantern, added a handle, and we had your very own beautiful lantern to take home.

We also continued our moon theme of this week, by talking about the moon phases today. Leona showed you the picture of a full moon, we said we had seen a full moon in the sky. Then we looked at different phases of the moon and learnt their names! Then we did the foil moon painting with a circle stencil and paint. We made a foil ball, then dipped it in the paint, taped your foil ball all around the stencil to make a full moon. We really enjoyed this activity and we were so proud of our work!
