This Week in Downend (W/C 29th April 2019)
This week in Downend, some of the babies ventured down to the basement! They sat on the big Pre-School chairs, and together made strawberry jam. With some help from Ellie they used knives to carefully cut the stems off, then used the different utensils to mash the strawberries down – yummy! The children took art into the main room this week, using chalks to make marks. As they drew, the babies repeated the names of the brightly coloured chalks – some even discovered shaking the paper makes an amazing crunchy sound! Out in the garden this week, Nursery set their butterflies free from the net, and watched them fly away!
This week Kindergarten have been very busy outside in the garden. Some children noticed the grassy tyre planters had overgrown – maybe it needs cutting? They chose to use scissors to trim the grass! Kindergarten also noticed lots of mini-beasts have arrived with the warmer weather, the children observed them flying around – one even landed in their hands! The children have also been exploring the new chalkboards in the garden with lots of mark making, as well as exploring size and comparisons by drawing around their outlines in the garden!
This week has been a very exciting week in Pre-School, as they watched their caterpillars turned into beautiful butterflies! The children have been really focused, discussing the process of the transformation and reading “The Hungry Caterpillar” to help them learn more about it. Pre-School have also been talking about the ways we can help keep Planet Earth healthy – always recycling, turning off the lights when not needed, and walking instead of driving! The children then used lots of green and blue paint to decorate the earth, and promise to help it. In the dining room Pre-School made some amazing vegan cakes, as well as enjoying an amazing visit from ‘Diddi Dance’! The children loved dancing along and playing with the musical instruments.
